‘Supernatural’ season 9 and ‘The Originals’ forming strong combination for The CW
Who knew going into the season that Tuesdays, long considered a dud night for The CW, would suddenly become their best night on TV? While “The Vampire Diaries” may be the network’s #1 show at the moment, the truth of the matter here is that it’s never really been paired with anything that really holds its own. Meanwhile, Tuesday is a night now where you have two beasts in “Supernatural” and “The Originals,” and they have each done a heck of a job of building and then keeping an audience.
On Tuesday night, these two shows combined their powers, Captain Planet-style, and in turn ended up giving The CW their best Tuesday as a whole in a whopping five years in total viewers. Did they have some things going for them? Sure. For one, there was not much in the way of competition among some of the other shows. You had CBS and ABC airing at various times repeats, and Fox’s comedies have never been huge hits. But, “The Originals” was still competing against “Pretty Little Liars,” and the competition for “Supernatural” is really only going to get there when “The Voice” arrives.
Really, what we believe these numbers shows is that with great quality comes a greater audience … and while it is easy to call the network a punching bag at times, these two shows are two of the strongest ones. They have dedicated followings, and they are given a reason to watch online and discuss with friends on social media. That is something that not every one of the older-skewing shows on TV has.
These two shows, as a result of this great performance, really are not going to be in danger of being canceled for a long time. “Supernatural” really will last as long as the actors and the writers want it to, while “The Originals” at least has a season 2 renewal locked up.
