ABC’s ‘Castle’ season 6, episode 13 review: Alexis Castle makes her move
“Limelight” was at one point originally set to be the first episode of “Castle” to come on after the holiday break, but after watching it last night, we feel pretty strongly that ABC made the right decision to switch it around. While there were some great moments in here, this episode probably was as a whole the weakest one of 2014 so far, and really is better off not being used as a lead-off to the rest of the season.
The biggest problem with it was that most of the story was spent dealing with something that came completely out of left field: Alexis ending her relationship (at least seemingly) with Pi. This is something that was very underdeveloped, and it honestly felt like the writers simply making the move to get rid of a character that most of America hated. We feel at least somewhat bad for Myko Oliver after all of this, mostly because he never really got a chance to make this guy anything other annoying. We wanted to genuinely root for Pi to be something more than just an irritant, but the show never really provided much of an opportunity to do that.
As for the rest of the episode, at least the case of a major celebrity (Alexandra Chando) being seemingly-killed-off in the eyes of the public (when it was really her decoy) was somewhat of a surprise. The fact that her mother did it in the end was both twisted and pretty predictable, though she at least had some good scenes with Alexis. The people that we really feel bad for after watching this are the moms / managers out there who actually aren’t so desperate to keep their daughter famous that they will intentionally try to put them on a dark path.
Meanwhile, Beckett made the move to finally declare her relationship publicly with Castle after realizing that she was not much of the tabloids telling her what was going on in her man’s personal life. This was at least a little something that she could do, and it wasn’t like she was throwing herself out into the spotlight permanently.
All in all, “Limelight” was a pretty solid episode still, and its biggest issue is just airing after two pretty great ones. At least now the Pi national nightmare is over, and maybe Alexis can move forward now and get some more stories that are interesting. There has to be something more she can do beyond date people and occasionally be put in harm’s way. Grade: B-.
