‘Justified’ season 5: Why didn’t Raylan see Winona in Flordia?
Anytime that you have a show as loved as “Justified” is, that of course comes with everyone wanting to ask all sorts of questions. In this case, that major question is why Raylan Givens didn’t really bother with Winona or his new child while he was in Florida during the season premiere. That would have been the perfect opportunity, after all, to do so; not only that, but it would make sense and help endear viewers to the character.
But ultimately, that didn’t happen, and it is pretty unclear as to whether or not it will this season. Speaking to TVLine, showrunner Graham Yost did his best to try to tap into Raylan’s brain for at least a minute or so:
“I think he’s afraid, and he doesn’t know why he’s afraid. And that’s something we’ll get into over the season, as much as Raylan’s willing to get into anything like that. But the simple answer is: Look at who his father was. That brings up a lot of concerns about what kind of father you will be.”
So why wouldn’t we see Winona or the child turn up later this season? All Yost would say is that it “was the plan” for this story to carry on, but that “plans change” and now it’s possible that they may not turn up again at all. This entire Winona story has been one of the more complicated / frustrating-at-times parts of the show. You have an actress in Natalie Zea who has been doing a variety of other projects, and then you had that pregnancy that seemed to last far longer than any in the entire history of television.
Hopefully, we’ll have at least some more information shared in one way or another later this season. Even if we don’t see the characters in the flesh, there could always be a reference to them.
