‘Good Morning America’ co-anchor Robin Roberts comes out in new post
After undergoing what has been a trying 2013 stuffed full of health complications, a dramatic return to “Good Morning America,” and a ton of other headlines, the news anchor, recently selected by Barbara Walters as one of the Most Fascinating People of 2013, announced on her Facebook page today that she has been in a relationship with a woman for quite a long time. While she did not go into too many details, she chose to make the announcement subtle in the form of a longer note discussing her year in general:
“Flashback 12/29/12….Hard to believe this was 1 year ago today..when I reached a critical milestone of 100 days post transplant…and KJ was finally allowed to come back home.
“At this moment I am at peace and filled with joy and gratitude … I am grateful to God, my doctors and nurses for my restored good health. I am grateful for my sister, Sally-Ann, for being my donor and giving me the gift of life. I am grateful for my entire family, my long time girlfriend, Amber, and friends as we prepare to celebrate a glorious new year together.”
This is of course a particularly brave announcement to make when you consider that Roberts has such close ties to the south, where homosexuality is not entirely accepted by all. She also faces the challenge of prejudice among some morning-show viewers. But then again, we generally feel that viewers are going to choose the right program to wake up to based on how much they appreciate and trust the anchor, and not by what goes on in their personal life. The ratings of other talk-based programs out there seem to serve as some sort of evidence of that.
