‘Glee’ season 5: Hear Lea Michele’s powerful new song ‘Battlefield’

Cannonball -Lea Michele is starting to give you more and more of an idea as to what she wants the sound of her upcoming debut album to be, and it seems to include some pretty powerful stuff. For some more evidence of that, just take a listen to “Battlefield,” which is the new original song off of her upcoming album “Louder.”

What we personally like about this song (which first premiered on Just Jared) is that it does not sound in any way just like you may expect it to. This is not the sort of traditional big ballad with a chorus and versus. Instead, the refrain “what seemed like a good idea / has turned into a battlefield” plays throughout the song interspersed with some other important emotional moments. It takes a few minutes for the emotion to really build up, but the conclusion to the “Glee” star’s track is a pretty powerful.

Based on what we’ve heard from both this song and “Cannonball,” Lea’s “Louder” may be the most ambitious, and in turn the best release from any actor to appear regularly on the show. Mark Salling’s album failed to make a big impression, and while Matthew Morrison did sell a good many copies of some of his previous albums, he has yet really have a successful song on the radio. The challenge that Lea runs into is that pop radio isn’t really hunting down huge voices these days. At the same time, though, she could find a home on the adult-contemporary market, where lyrics with emotional meanings tend to fare better than ones with a house beat throughout. We’ll have a better idea early next year as to how successful Lea really is going to do as a solo artist away from the show.
