‘American Idol XIII’ promo: America can love guitars again (video)
Last season on “American Idol,” it felt like the show really was as desperate as humanly possible to try to shy away from the idea of yet another guy who could strum the guitar. When you look at the top 10 guys, there were not very many of them with the capacity to strum and sing at the same time. Also, the editing on some of them was pretty rough.
But this time around, the show is interested in reminding us as much as possible (see the promo below, first posted by TVLine) that there are some guitar players on this season, men and women, with the capacity to go far. They have the approval of the judges for now, and they will then just have to pass through the ever-so-rigorous part of the competition known as Hollywood Week.
Why are the guitar players such a huge draw when it comes to this show? The specific answer for that is that they tell a story more often than not when they sing, and since this is not the show that really merits a huge production with fancy costumes and working the stage like a Lady Gaga, you tend to be better off if you can bring something else to entertain the audience. Playing the guitar makes you more connected to the music, since almost all of it is linked directly to your performance. Unfortunately, playing the guitar does not make you nearly as successful in the real world, when you have to compete against artists of all varieties.
Personally, we feel like “American Idol” is well on its way to delivering an improved season from last year, but as for whether or not it is truly better than season 12, that’s going to depend on some of these people trying out.
