‘Downton Abbey’ season 5 could be the last for Elizabeth McGovern
We have said recently that “Downton Abbey” may be best suited to end after season 5, mostly because it feels like the best move for the series to go out on top, and before people start to roll their eyes and question why it is still on TV.
But do some of the cast members agree? Based on some new remarks from star Elizabeth McGovern, it is possible that she will be through with the show following whatever storylines unfold next year. Speaking in a new interview with the Express following one of the concerts for her band Sadie and the Hotheads, she defended the show for some of its controversial season 4 storylines (which include, with a warning for the unspoiled), Anna being raped by Mr. Green, and also discussed what her future beyond season 5 could be:
“I know there is going to be another series but don’t know whether I would be up for a season after that … I’ve really enjoyed this [fourth] season. I like it when we all have to do something a bit shocking, and I love it when people get all wound up – it means it’s grabbing them.
“Of course there are always little challenges about playing a part, both when it’s central to the story and when it’s not. In both cases you have to make both work. One of my biggest challenges is wondering why Cora doesn’t seem to know what’s going on in her house so much of her time!”
Could the show continue after a season 5? We assume that it is possible, but there are so many other actors looking to do other things. Hugh Bonneville, Allen Leech, and Lily James in particular have been managing a variety of movie gigs, with the latter even playing Cinderella in an upcoming big-screen adaptation. McGovern has her music career that she would love to put more of a focus on, and some of the other actors, including Sophie McShera, star on multiple shows a year. They all have plenty of other things to do, and that is thanks to “Downton Abbey” filling up only a part of the year.
The Christmas special for season 4 is still to come this year, and if you want to read more on that, just be sure to click here. We’ll have some more news as it comes out.
