‘Supernatural’ season 9, episode 7 preview: Jensen Ackles’ Dean has a nickname
In the new clip that we have to share today from Tuesday’s “Supernatural” episode, we somehow manage to learn something new about Dean Winchester that was previously a mystery to us, despite us knowing this character for nine years: For a stint of a few months back when he was 16 years old, he stayed at a boys’ home trying to be “reformed” after getting caught stealing. His father had come up with the idea to lie to Sam about it, and he had somehow never decided to tell his brother the truth … until now.
As a matter of fact, we imagine that Dean probably would have never said anything were it not for the fact that his past influenced a new hunt for the two. The sneak peek that we have focuses on Dean getting a call from Sonny, the man who ran the establishment in the Catskills who apparently has a rather interesting / funny name for Dean: D-Dog. Given the time in which Dean was 16, this name was probably what was generally thought of as cool by everyone back then.
So is Sam really hurt by the fact that Dean was holding out on him? Maybe a little bit, mostly because this was a secret that, at the end of the day, is just silly. There was nothing really to gain from not saying anything about this, given that Dean misbehaving is hardly a terrible thing. But, there is a parallel here to think about, given that we know Jensen Ackles’ character is hiding a secret from his brother that could be far more damaging: The truth about what transpired with Ezekiel, and why Sam is still alive. This is a subject that will be addressed in time, but probably not in full this week. This feels more like a heartfelt episode that brings you back to the heart of what makes the Winchesters who they are, and shows that sometimes, there are new secrets out there worth unearthing.

Peeks into the Winchesters’ childhood are usually enjoyable. As for “D Dog” being his nickname, considering Dean’s (at least up until “Dog Dean Afternoon”) apparent lukewarm attitude toward dogs, I find that rather ironic. I have a feeling all of Dean’s recent lies and deceptions, whether they be to Sam or Cas, are going to come back to haunt him in a major way.

siomiose-Jensen is not homophobic. You just don’t like that Dean is a straight guy.

Who the heck cares about d-list homophobic Jensen Ackles? I was a big fan until it became clear that he was a homophobe. No thanks. PS: Jared, you ‘re okay in my book.
