‘The X Factor’ UK week 5 song spoilers: Nicholas McDonald, Rough Copy sing standards

Nicholas -In some ways, having another week on “The X Factor” full of old music is irritating, but we actually don’t mind a week bringing us some crooner tunes. Even these songs are classic, there is something still refreshing about hearing them time and time again if they are sung by the right person. Those are the key words, unfortunately: The right person. A classic in the hands of the wrong person is a complete disaster.

We are going to have some of our official rankings on this top 8 contestants a little bit later in the week, but for now we want to present you with some thoughts just from the standpoint of who is singing what, and whether or not that sounds like it is going to be a particularly good fit for them.

Abi Alton, “That’s Life” – A great Frank Sinatra song that could be slowed down and turned into an interesting piano standard. If she chooses to speed things up for whatever reason or to sing it like the original, we know there will be trouble, trouble, trouble (just to give this a Taylor Swift echo at the end).

Hannah Barrett, “This Is a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” – Predict a standing ovation. This is the perfect song for a singing competition, since it gives so much opportunity to unleash some vocal theatrics, big notes, and runs. Hannah has to love having this song to perform.

Luke Friend, “Moondance” – This is actually the only big band tune that we are not extremely familiar with. Luke is coming off a big week, though, so he needs to keep it near a high level.

Nicholas McDonald, “Dream a Little Dream” – It does seem perfect that Nicholas would do a song that is a favorite Michael Buble cover, since he is Louis Walsh’s “baby Buble.” (Does anyone else think that Louis is talking to a puppy when he says that?)

Rough Copy, “Hit the Road Jack” – This is currently charting to be our favorite. It’s a great song anchored by three guys that are great entertainers. Even if they don’t make it current, they will still make it fun.

Sam Bailey, “New York, New York” – Sam’s beyond a doubt the best pure singer in the competition, but this is a tricky song because it can be a little cheesy and almost Broadway. She needs to capture the ambition in the lyrics and not the cheese of it all.

Sam Callahan, “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head” – We are just one step away from trying to talk about Sam like we did with Christopher Maloney. He’s nowhere near that awful, but we just don’t feel like anything we say about him matters.

Tamera Foster, “Cry Me a River” – Tamera needs a huge performance here, since the tabloids have obliterated her as of late. She’s got talent, but she really needs to do a image makeover in a way that does not include her look.
