ABC’s ‘Scandal’ season 3 spoilers: ‘Treme’ actress cast as Olivia’s mom
How is this for a network show actually keeping things quiet? Save for maybe Marvel’s “Agents of SHIELD,” we cannot really sit here with a straight face and tell you of too many instances in which a show has managed to keep a major story under wraps for a long span of time.
But somehow, “Scandal” managed to pull this off with its latest casting news. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Khandi Alexander of “Treme” and “CSI: Miami” has been cast in the role of Maya Lewis, otherwise known as the late mother to Olivia Pope. The reason that this casting was kept under a heavy veil is just because it would have ruined a story had it come out before now. It was just revealed on last week’s episode that Maya was a victim of a plane crash that may have actually had ties to Fitzgerald Grant. In other words, this certainly complicates things when it comes to him and Olivia’s relationship, doesn’t it?
Since Lewis is dead (pending some sort of ridiculous twist that is worthy of throwing popcorn at your TV), this story is almost sure to take place almost entirely via flashbacks. Olivia’s father in Rowan is still very much alive, and creating a sort of hell-on-earth scenario for Olivia where she has to dine with him once a week, even though there is very little of a tangible benefit for her to do so (save for maybe satisfying his need).
Clearly with this whole story, the major thing that “Scandal” is proving to us here yet again is that somehow, they are not afraid to continue to try topping themselves when it comes to the crazy twists. Just when you think that there is no way that the story can get even more insane, the show pulls another rabbit out of its hat and tricks you. We don’t know how it will ever be crazier than having Fitz partially responsible for killing Olivia’s mom, but we’re sure they will find a way to figure it out.
