ABC’s ‘Scandal’ season 3, episode 5 review: Is Olivia going to work for Fitz again?

Take a look -One of the reasons why we have enjoyed “Scandal” over the years is that they have done a pretty solid job with making Fitz’s Presidency actually feel like that; so even when he is dealing with some dramatic events and terrible circumstances, he is also at the same time having to act on what are some official duties. One of those includes having to sit down at the White House Correspondents Dinner, and as we neared the end of the episode, this became a major story on a night that also included a number of other little developments.

But the biggest shocker of the entire ordeal came at the very end, when Mellie of all people approached Olivia Pope with the proposition to re-join his election team, and help him actually get back in office again. They each knew that she is the right person for the job, but she has to decide whether or not she actually wants it at this point.

But what may complicate this decision for Olivia more than anything else was the shocker that came out at the end of the night courtesy of “Operation Remington.” What was it that Fitz and the Government has been trying to hide? Based on the latest theory from Huck, it involves an airplane being shot down from over Iceland … one that may have contained a certain mother of Olivia Pope named “Maya Lewis” on it. If Fitz had any connection to the death of her mother, you could say that it would make it almost impossible for the two to try and work through some of their relationship differences.

Just in case this was all not complicated enough, Olivia has another offer on the table to run the Presidential campaign of Lisa Kudrow’s character, who made the difficult admission tonight that she had a child at an early age. While she held back on the fact that her child was actually the woman who believed her to be a much younger sister, this was still something that could gained her a great deal of favor to become a major competitor against Fitz in the final election. Add to this Sally possibly running, and you have a mess.

For this being Halloween, it would have been easy for “Scandal” to pull a “Grey’s Anatomy” and to have an episode that really did nothing to move the story forward. This did the opposite. It was one of the most action-packed hours of the series, and a clear example as to what we’re hoping for the rest of the way. Grade: A-.
