2013 Emmys: Merritt Wever wins for ‘Nurse Jackie,’ gives incredibly short speech
Who saw the first win of the 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards coming? We’re not going to do an article about every single victory over the night, but the first major surprise happened mere moments after the show began via “Nurse Jackie” star Merritt Wever.
What was even more surprising than this win, though, was what she said during her speech … or specifically, what she didn’t say. The actress literally just went up on stage, said “thank you so much,” and then said she “had to go” before walking off. It was strange, funny, and also probably going to drive the internet insane over the next few days.
So why did she not have much more to say in accepting her award? The simple answer to that may be that she wanted to shake things up and do something different. We certainly can’t imagine that she had any other sort of motivation behind it. After all, we are sure that there are agents, co-stars, and family members that are probably bummed that they didn’t get a shout-out, so she hopefully told them in advance that she was going to do this. The only other thing that we can imagine is that CBS gave her a ridiculously short amount of time to speak, and she decided to bail rather than getting into a speech and being interrupted later.
After the commercial break, Neil Patrick Harris came on and proclaimed that this was one of the “best speeches ever,” and we have a feeling that we are not going to see any other quite like this tonight.
What do you think about Wever’s super-short, super-strange speech? We’re going to be giving you updates on the show throughout the night, and you can see them just by heading on over to the link here.
