‘Doctor Who’s’ 50th anniversary invades Fan Expo: Daleks, the Tardis, and more
There are always a few simple joys that come with attending a convention like Fan Expo Canada, whether it be seeing some great costumes, being shocked at the long waits for panels, or trying to see how hungry you can get after eating your pre-bought snacks before finally breaking down buying a cold, undercooked pizza slice.
But today, we’re talking “Doctor Who.” The Toronto convention has always been a great one for Whovians, in between seeing the society of Canada turn up, and watching all of the various iterations of David Tennant and Matt Smith wander around the convention floor. Colin Baker also represented the former Doctors by meeting fans and signing autographs. (Seeing cosplays of some of the earlier versions of the character is rare, but it does happen.)
Some of the highlights from this weekend in “Doctor Who” included seeing various models of a number of characters, and whole sea of Daleks of different colors and sizes, along with a rather large model of the Tardis controls. There were also photo opportunities inside of a police box, which any Whovian knows is integral to the season.
Sadly, the wait is still a long one until “Doctor Who” returns to television. The 50th anniversary special is going to be simulcast all across the world on November 23, and following that we will have the Christmas special and the final appearance of Smith as the 11th Doctor. Peter Capaldi will likely make his debut at the end of that installment, and from there we will have to sit around and wait until next year for the character to be back in action again.
All we can say about the upcoming eighth season is that based on current evidence, Peter Jackson is not directing an installment … for now.
