‘Sons of Anarchy’ season 6: Charlie Hunnam on playing Jax Teller, show’s future

JaxCharlie Hunnam is definitely going to be a busier guy than usual (which is saying quite a bit) over these next few weeks. In addition to filming “Sons of Anarchy” season 6, which he has been doing for much of the past couple of months, he also now has to take part in a promotional tour for his movie “Pacific Rim.” Just to give you an even greater sense of how immersed he is still in the two separate worlds, the actor visited Chris Hardwick for his new interview on the Nerdist podcast this week wearing the tattoo sleeve that he sports to play his character of Jax Teller.

While the far-reaching and very-insightful interview is not strictly limited to talk on the FX series, Hunnam does talk about how amazed that he is that showrunner Kurt Sutter still has material to write, and how he manages to even do everything that he does when it comes to the show. It is thanks to the relationship and the trust that he has with him that Charlie says he will still on board the show for as long as Kurt needs him to, even if the plans change to where season 7 is no longer the show’s last year. (This is when Hunnam’s current contract ends.)

Charlie also discusses the difficulties that come with saying goodbye to a character, something that he is going to have to do on the show at some point, through the lens of watching what happened to his friend Ryan Hurst upon the tragic end of Opie:

“We’ve lived with all of these guys for so long, [and even longer] for Kurt … I know he deeply mourns all of the characters we lose. I know it was really hard on him to lose Opie, and he deeply mourned the loss of that character.”

It’s some very interesting stuff to hear, as Hunnam reasons that it may actually be easier to say goodbye to a character if they are dead, given that you don’t have to imagine them existing out in the world without you. If you haven an hour-plus of time today, be sure to check it out.
