‘Dexter’ season 8 reaction: Michael C. Hall talks directing ‘Every Silver Lining’

DexterSunday night’s episode of “Dexter” was more than just a great hour of TV (and proof that the show is gearing up to end this year in style). It also marked the directorial debut for one Michael C. Hall, and proved that this is a man whose talents extend far beyond just acting out on the screen.

In the video below, you can see the award-winning actor try to discuss everything that went into creating the perfect episode, from devising where all of the cameras went to having to deal with the “one-act play” structure that was directing his own lengthy scenes with Charlotte Rampling (who is giving an Emmy-worthy performance thus far, and quite possibly the strongest of any female guest star ever).

Hall also openly discusses having even more of a respect now for many of his co-stars than he did previously after seeing so many of their talents from this vantage point. This was a big episode for a good many of them, especially Jennifer Carpenter (who is still struggling to regain her footing as Deb) and also Desmond Harrington (who continues to find new dimensions and wrinkles for the Quinn character, who is far more now than just a dirty cop).

While Michael seemed to enjoy this gig, we don’t imagine that he is going to be doing a lot more of this on “Dexter.” Most of the series has now been filmed, and it is best to give some of the show’s longtime directors an opportunity to take on the work near the end. With that being said, he clearly appreciated the opportunity to do something a bit different.
