NBC’s ‘The Voice’: Hear Michelle Chamuel rock Taylor Swift’s ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’

The VoiceWe’re coming back here from a few days of vacation, so our typical review of “The Voice” is going to be suspended for the week. However, we do want to introduce one performance from Monday night’s show that nearly blew our glasses clean off of our face: Getting the opportunity to see Michelle Chamuel completely dominate Taylor Swift’s country-pop smash “I Knew You Were Trouble.”

We know that unless you are a “swiftie” (as the singer’s fans have taken to calling themselves), the idea of listening to a electronic artist like Michelle taking on one of her songs would probably result in a groan or an eye roll. Taylor’s one of the more polarizing songwriters out there, mostly because so many people feel like she tackles the same subject matter again and again until she runs out of breakup analogies. However, this was rather fantastic, from the sweeping high notes to the rock-swagger dance to the way in which we forgot that this was a Taylor Swift song all together.

It’s also nice to point out a lovely dose of irony. On a night where we were basically handed a country-music pizza with a small side of country-music bread sticks, the biggest country superstar on the planet right now chose to visit someone who is probably the furthest away from the genre out of anyone on the show.

The performance was met at the end with a flurry of applause loud enough to keep the coaches from talking. Then again, Adam Levine may be thanking them for this based on the irrational level of hatred that came in for him sarcastically “hating” America last week (guess his forced apology worked).

If you want to take a look at where we put Michelle on our “Voice” rankings over the weekend, just take a look at the article here. Did you love this? Hate it? Did the song choice make you think of that viral video featuring a goat singing the chorus? We want to hear from you below!
