ABC’s ‘Scandal’ season 3 spoilers: Tony Goldwyn on Olivia – Fitz strategy
It’s fair to say at this point that “Scandal” season 3 is a mystery. Why? The simple answer is just because the scripts are still being written. We know that Shonda Rhimes had her team getting some story ideas together even before the season 2 finale aired, but as for where they are now and just how much progress that they have really made, both subjects are pretty definite mysteries.
For Tony Goldwyn, it appears as though he’s just happy that the show has somewhere to grow from. Speaking in a new interview with E! News, the actor explained about the future for the fan-favorite couple Olivia and Fitz based on something that they know very well at this point: Fan reaction on Twitter to anything and everything that transpires:
“Twitter just explodes … When Olivia and I are together, it goes nuts. The ending of the show this time, [the finale], there was a lot of controversy … If Olivia and Fitz are happy, there wouldn’t be much to do on season 3.”
We know that this couple will not be in the best place when season 3 starts, but what is interesting about it this time, at least in comparison to where the pair has been in the past, is that this is all their own doing. Olivia made the decision to not have Fitz give up everything for her and to keep fighting. Of course, it will be interesting to see just how things are going to change now that the secret is out like a ten-ton brick that she and the President were having an affair.

I’m not buying if Olitz is together the show has nowhere to go. But, I’m just a fan; I don’t act, write or produce. I hope the show have a lot of success I really do; I just won’t part take. I think this is a cope out. If all of this is necessary then 2 x19 – 2×21 didn’t need to happen. I feel that this: I’m not a toy for you to play with my hopes, my dreams or when you need your ratings to jump, I’m not a fly by night gladiator, If you want me back you need to earn me until then I’m done!

Given the nature of the show, this was predictable…in a good way. The viewing public is in an uproar but giving them what they want right now isn’t good for the longevity of the Olitz storyline. From the very beginning, their relationship has been full of obstacles. Some by circumstances beyond their control, others have been self-imposed. These are two powerful overachievers at the pinnacle of their professional lives who have gaping personal flaws. Daddy issues, control issues, trust issues, etc. I believe that both Fitz and Olivia have to first face their personal demons before they can FINALLY be together…as we all do in order to be in a loving, successful relationship. I think Liv was right to walk away right now because it is unrealistic for them to be together at this time. She nailed it when she told Fitz that he would come to resent her for Defiance if he didn’t run and win with Mellie by his side…It’s the only conceivable plan. I’m interested in seeing their evolution as individuals and how they will resolve these issues to have an even stronger connection. Remember how Liv told Edison that she wants a passionate, painful, life changing type of love…The season finale was just another example of her brokenness being played out. Fitz’s reaction with Mellie…just an example of his. Don’t give up on Olitz. The delayed gratification will make for some compelling storymaking…I hope!!!

Agreee with everything you both said. It’s lazy writing. There are tons of NEW things the writers can do with Fitz and Olivia other than sending him back to Mellie – AGAIN.

Oh, we are so sick of hearing that the only way for the writers to have something to write is to create faux angst for Olitz.

Sick of it, indeed. Fed up. It’s over the top with the forces trying to keep them apart. Way over the top. If they don’t rein in the story, the late night comedians are going to start laughing at it, not with it.

Maybe they need Castle writers to come to Scandal set and explain how to do it.
