‘Doctor Who’ season 8 spoilers: Matt Smith, David Tennant talk 50th anniversary filming
There are a number of remarkable things that you could say about the “Doctor Who” fan base, including their imagination, devotion, or simply willingness to watch a show on Saturday when they could be off doing a number of other things (especially when the weather is warming up.) However, one of the greatest things that the cast has ever done took place this week, when many of them banded together in an effort to preserve something that is very sacred: What happened in the season finale.
You see, the episode was leaked in some parts of America accidentally, but the folks over at BBC promised a present to those who were informed as a way of keeping the conclusion of the story under wraps. It worked for the most part, and thus, we have a lovely new video below of David Tennant and Matt Smith talking about their work on the upcoming 50 anniversary special for the show that is airing later this year.
In the video, the two talk about some of what makes the experience of playing The Doctor so remarkable. You are a part of a rather specific and unique fraternity, and there is only a select few out there who can really begin to understand what you go through while playing the character. It can be an incredible opportunity, but like with anything else, there is also a downside and some other struggles that you have to deal with (which we’re sure include not being able to really ever sit down for dinner in public).
Tennant and Smith are just two of the Doctors who will be returning for this special, which we consider to be a love letter already without even seeing it. There could also be an additional, previously-unknown Doctor joining the fray. To read more on that, just be sure to check out our article over here.

The secret doctor theory is interesting but it seems you are all forgetting that Clara had never seen that doctor.

One thing I’ve learned is that no matter how I try to second-guess Moffat he always comes up with something I didn’t think of but here goes:
John Hurt’s Doctor says: “What I did, I did without choice, in the name of peace and sanity.”, suggesting that he ended the Time War . Eccleston’s Doctor says (regarding the Daleks) something along the lines of “I saw them all burn…I caused them to burn!” (haven’t had time to look up the exact quote but you get the gist) so logically the Time War Doctor is the one who “broke the promise” – he killed deliberately instead of saving lives – and if we add to that the fact that we never see the 8th/9th regeneration it suggests to me that Hurt is playing the 8th Doctor (McGann) who has become aged and scarred by his experiences in the Time War and thus now looks much older and ragged. Look closely – there is more than a passing resemblance between the two actors and McGann has played the Doctor for longer than any other actor (via the audio adventures but I believe they are still accepted as canon) so it all makes sense to me – but as usual I’m sure the “Grand Moff” will manage to pull the rug from under my feet as usual!!
I'm dead now... sad face.

if it wast not on TV it is not strictly “canon”. but any contradictions in the storys is just because of all the changes to the time lines. so everything is true, for a given value of “True” and i agree john hurt=paul mcgann, the valeyard thing is to obvious.

Yeah he broke the promise of his name. Like Doctor means healer.
Like clara’s name means that she is clara she has to be clara, and the doctor has to be a healer not a killer.

Doctor also means to falsify or alter. Maybe this is a yin-yang thing.

McGann has also hinted in interviews that he hasn’t ruled out a “last minute” call-up for the 50th – they would need him in it at some stage if only to show him becoming John Hurt. I’m sure there will be many easter eggs like this in the special for us fanboys and girls.

john hurt was the ninth doctor which makes matt smith 12th
that explains why you dont see the 8th doctor regenerate

John Hurt’s Doctor, could be the one during Last Great Time War, but I want to posit a different scenario. What If this “new” Doctor is who he was before he left Gallifrey with his granddaughter?

They’re pretty much my two leading theories, yeah…

I think the same! John Hurt is who the doctor was when he was in Gallifrey and before he took the name doctor.. And he was bad/evil

Oh God Oh God I started crying because I thought Matt was going to die, but John Hurt was definitely unexpected. What did he do during the time war, and if he is the forgotten ninth doctor then that makes Matt Smith the 12th. A time lord can only have 12 regenerations. What are they going to do? Will it all end with Matt? Crazy Episode my friends.

They can regenerate 12 times. So that means there are 13 doctors possible, matt smith is the second last one.

But remember, the 10th doctor used a regeneration in Journey’s End and transfered that to his severed hand. Doesn’t that count as using a regeneration?

River also transferred all her remaining regenerations to The Doctor… so shouldn’t he have many more than the normal 13?

But she didn’t, though. She used her regenerative ENERGY to revive him from death (or near-death) which needless to say who take a hell of a lot of energy. The cumulative energy of all of her remaining regenerations, to be precise…. ENERGY!

No – he was using left-over regeneration energy from his last regeneration. That’s all.

The Doctor is smart. Why can’t he figure out exactly how regeneration energy works and find a way to recharge it?

Don’t worry guys – as a long time fan who has watched the show from the beginning I can often annoy my sons by dredging up facts like this: – the Time Lords can, if they wish, allocate a further set of regenerations to a fellow Time Lord as happened to the Master ‘way back in the Tom Baker era so one way or another, as long as the ratings demand it – there will always be a Doctor on our screens.

But aren’t all the fellow timelords dead? 10 says “they all died”, so who could allocate additional regenerations?

Didn’t Riversong give her time lord energy to the Matt Smith version of the Doctor to save his life? That’s got to be good for at least a few more regenerations

They changed it. They now can regenerate unlimited times.

People have been talking about the limit ever since the series came back in 2005, but if you noticed the writers have gone out of their way to NOT mention the limit ever in the last 8 years. The closest that they’ve ever come is on an episode of Sarah Jane Adventures and the Doctor said 503 times (or some number equally as large). So I go under the impression that the only things that are properly canon are the things that are said in the New Doctor Who. They are free to use what they like from the Old show and toss what they don’t like.
