‘The Walking Dead’ season 4 spoilers: Robert Kirkman on Andrew Lincoln’s future
Would Robert Kirkman and the producers on “The Walking Dead” ever make the move to kill off who is effectively the star of the show? When we first wrote about the people who we find to be untouchable in the world of the show (not the comics), Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes was at the top of the list. Viewers like to be invested in the story of a hero, and with there only being so much time available in an hour, you don’t really get a great opportunity to get to know all of the other characters.
So what does Kirkman have to say in contrast to this notion? Speaking in a chat with fans on an AMC blog, the source writer expressed that he really had no fear killing off Rick, or any other character:
“We’ve been saying that no one is safe on this show, and I wouldn’t rule out seeing the death of Rick Grimes at almost any point.”
While the “no one is safe” argument is a probably a smart one to make, there are some characters that this show can’t stand to lose more than others. Rick’s death would be met with shock; meanwhile, we see a Daryl death met with anger and a Glenn / Maggie death with hopelessness. The goal in killing off someone is to create a reaction, but always one that still encourages the viewer to want to tune in to see what happens next. You may get that reaction with these characters, The Governor, or even a fan favorite in Michonne, but it’s also a risk in that you may alienate some fans.

The current character development of the TV show has not developed any other characters yet to be ready to take over leadership from Rick Grimes. It would be a huge mistake to kill off Andrew Lincoln’s character at this point. I think Kirkman’s comic books are so far ahead in storyline that killing off Rick may be possible, as another leader may be ready to take over.

If they are naive enough to kill Rick, they would soon learn it was the wrong move. They already have let down their viewers with that lame Season 3 finale. If they really want to kill the show, then I say go ahead and kill Rick. See how many viewers they lose because they want to shock people instead of writing good stories.
