‘The Walking Dead’ season 4 debate: Who are the untouchables?

When you have a show like “The Walking Dead,” you almost have to expect one thing above all else: that death is inevitable. There were plenty of notable characters who ended up waving goodbye to the series throughout season 3, whether it be Lori, Milton, Merle, or Andrea, and there are going to be plenty more moving forward.

But who is set to drop next? While there is always a certain air of mystery around this question, the structure of this show also makes it so that there are a few people that you will believe to be safe, regardless of what happens in the Robert Kirkman comics. We call these people “The Untouchables,” since they, like Jack or Hurley in “Lost” or Deb on “Dexter,” are people that we simply cannot see dying until the very end of the show.  While some shows have a pretty large core of these people, we really only see there as being four here.

Rick – On the TV show, we really are seeing so much of this story through Rick’s eyes that it would be strange to see it move on without him. He is also the greatest source of dichotomy between the person that he was before the zombie apocalypse, and the person that he is now.

Glenn and Maggie – We’re putting these two together for one simple reason: we can’t see you having one without the other. This is such a dark and at times depressing show, and you have to dream that there is a sliver of hope somewhere out there. These two, for now, are the evidence that there can be something good that comes from these terrible times.

Daryl – If Norman Reedus ever dies on this show, we imagine that AMC will have an angry mob outside of their door. He is the greatest creation of the TV show at the moment: a character that we can relate to and be surprised by, and a guy who keeps the story fresh.
