‘Downton Abbey’ season 4 spoilers: Real competition for Michelle Dockery’s Mary
It still feels a little strange to be talking about romance for Mary on “Downton Abbey” season 4, especially since we are still reeling in many ways from the death of Matthew Crawley. However, we also have to realize that the reality of the situation is that the series is not going to give us much time as viewers to mourn at all. After all, the show will pick up six months after the events of the season 3 Christmas special, which means that we are going to have ample opportunities to see Mary move forward with her life.
While we’re certain that Michelle Dockery’s character will still hold his memory rather close, she will have at least advanced enough in her life to be able to not constantly relive every finer detail in relation to it.
One thing that we are learning now about the story ahead, though, is that it is a little too safe to assume that Mary and her son George are going to end up starting a new family with Lord Anthony Gillingham (Tom Cullen), one of the new characters popping up this year. However, show fan site Downton Abbey Addicts is reporting that another man in Charles Blake (Julian Ovenden), another dashing young aristocrat, is also going to make a play for her. There is no word on whether or not Mary will pick either one of them at the end of the day, and perhaps we should think of this as the Edwardian England version of “The Bachelorette.”
There are a plethora of other characters coming on, including an opera singer and reportedly the show’s first-ever black character, but there are fewer details available there when it comes to their story.
What do you think about Mary’s storyline, and do you think that she will choose to be with any man by the time “Downton Abbey” season 4 is done? If you want to read some more coverage pertaining to Hugh Bonneville, you can do so over at the link here.

Why is it we are so willing to condemn women for what, really, are minor things, yet give men a pass when they treat people poorly/and are jerks? It it disturbing to me.

If it took two full season for Mary to finally accept Mathews proposal of marriage, I doubt Mary will make a final decision on her next fiance by the end of season four. I do think however courting two handsome men will make for great entertainment for Sunday nights! Then there is the question of Branson… who will be his love interest? Will he be married by the end of season four? Will Ana and Bates start a family? Will Edith really take on the role of Gregson’s lover? Lastly, what trouble will Lady Rose get herself into? So much to think about between now and January 2014!

Before Mary finds another mate, I hope she has some suitors who reject her when they see her “horrid” side. Matthew recognized and accepted it–as he said. However, at the very end he seemed to be taking more notice of her nasty moments. Many men might like the thrill of the chase and a whirl with Mary, but back away from committing for life to such a self-centered person who has such an exaggerated sense of her own importance and little empathy for anyone who even mildly threatens her domination of every person and situation. I estimate her maturity into a decent person should take all of season four. Remember, anyone who marries her will not be Earl as her son is now the Earl. Meanwhile, she will seethe with jealousy as Edith’s’ career and her relationship with Michael Gregson blossom. She will even make a play for Gregson only to discover he has eyes only for Edith.

I believe that Mary deserves a happy ending to her story. We all loved Matthew but Mary is too young to spend the rest of her life mourning him. Like she said in season two, just because she can’t have her first choice doesn’t mean she can’t have a life.
