‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 4, episode 18 review: Katherine’s back; who ‘took’ the cure?

Nina DobrevWhen the word first came out that Thursday night’s new episode of “The Vampire Diaries” was a game-changer, no one was kidding. There were so many surprises thrown in here that it’s hard to really know where to start, whether it was the re-appearance of Elijah, Katherine being Katherine, and of course the story of the cure getting even more complicated.

About half an hour through this episode, it actually seemed as though this cure story was finally at an end when Rebekah made the move to take it just after watching Katherine dip Damon’s head in some vervain water. Unfortunately, we learned soon after that this “cure” was hardly really a cure at all. Instead, it was a cleverly-hidden fake to make people people as though she had placed the cure in an accessible spot. Meanwhile, Katherine later (after a brief chat with her “love” Elijah that went very badly) retrieved it from the residence of a “friend” that she had made while holed up in her new Pennsylvania hiding place.

Eventually, though, Katherine redeemed herself and actually ended up giving Elijah the cure, which allowed him to have the power. Stefan still wants to give this to Elena in order to actually get away from her and move forward with his life. However, Elena wasn’t having it. Instead, she made a human sacrifice to show just how serious she is about never going back. Should the Salvatores really pursue this anymore? That is very much a worthy question.

While all of this was going on in Pennsylvania, there was plenty of drama back in Mystic Falls as Caroline was forcing Klaus to make a choice in order to be saved: convince Tyler that he is safe, or he will end up dying. Unfortunately, the “stake” that was supposedly in his heart turned out to be a trick by Silas, and he was fine … and he did at least tell Caroline that he’s not actively hunting Tyler.
