‘Once Upon a Time’ season 2 spoilers: New details surface on ‘Wonderland’ spin-off
With every passing day, the story starts to become a little bit more clear on the upcoming “Once Upon a Time” spin-off series; and now, we are learning a little bit more about what the structure of this new potential project could be.
According to a new report from Deadline, “Prison Break” alum Zack Estrin and Jane Espenson, who works as a consulting producer on the flagship series, have each been brought over to help take part in this new potential project for ABC. If the series gets picked up, Estrin will help Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz as executive producers, while we will continue to see Espenson in her familiar role. This pilot will be shot in April at the end of production of the fairytale drama’s second season, and it is not clear as of this writing as to whether or not it is in contention for the fall or as a fill-in show to air at midseason.
The report does add that the show was originally intended to revolve somewhat around the Mad Hatter, who was going to be the bridge between “Once Upon a Time” and this series. However, Sebastian Stan’s lack of availability rendered this difficult, and the fan reaction to a possible recast caused producers to nix the idea. Instead, the show will be telling their story from a female character named Alice, and we will see some other characters potentially (including Barbara Hershey’s Cora, who is also the Queen of Hearts) in some capacity via flashbacks.
We’re still holding to the idea that this series could be structured in the same way that “American Horror Story” is for FX, with the exception being that here, every season could focus on a different world. This has not been confirmed, but we would like to see not only that, but have this show air to fill up thirteen weeks so that “Once Upon a Time” could air straight through the rest of the season. (Nor more madness during Oscar season!)
