‘American Horror Story’ season 3 spoilers: Ryan Murphy talks Kathy Bates role
As you may have heard already, Ryan Murphy has brought out some of the big guns for “American Horror Story” season 3, specifically when it comes to casting Oscar-winner Kathy Bates for a character that is going to share a good bit of screentime with the one played by Jessica Lange. Just having these two ladies together on a show to begin with is pure gold, but then it is more or less heaven once you realize that you also still have Lily Rabe, Evan Peters, and Sarah Paulson along for the ride.
So what does Murphy has to say about this new character? Speaking in a chat with TVLine, he shared that this is a woman that will somehow make who Bates played in “Misery” look nice, and she could feasibly be that sort of terrible female villain that the showrunner was hinting at earlier this year:
“Oh, Kathy’s never [played] someone this bad … Her [character] is a bad, bad woman!”
Murphy also explained how he managed to actually convince Bates to come on the show in the first place:
“Jessica told me in Season 1 that Kathy was a huge fan of the show, so I just put that in the back of my mind … When we were crafting this season, I found this character — a true-life character — so I called Kathy and said, ‘I don’t know if you want to do TV again, but I’ve got this character…’ She said, ‘I love you and I love the show. Lemme think for two weeks’ — and then she called me in an hour and said, ‘I love it! I’ll do it!’ It was great.”
The third season of “American Horror Story” will begin shooting likely in late spring or early summer, and there still are a number of other roles left to be cast. With that in mind, some actors from the first two seasons of the show, including most notable Zachary Quinto, have yet to be confirmed or denied to be returning.
