Super Bowl commercials 2013: ‘The Walking Dead’ season 3, Time Warner team up
The ad – Time Warner Cable with “The Walking Dead”
The premise – It’s pretty simple: trying to show off all of the different ways that the cable provider allows you to watch your favorite shows, almost as if you are living and interacting with some of the characters.
What works – Pretty much everything here. Time Warner makes it very clear throughout the ad what is being advertised, and they tell you at the end where to go if you want to see some more information on it. Meanwhile, implementing a popular show works even better here than what Quill.com did with their Dunder-Mifflin paper. Getting Norman Reedus to appear here is what really steals the show.
What doesn’t – The only minor complaint we have is the guy lounging around while the wife does all of the cleaning. A little sitcomy, right?
The verdict – This is a great ad, and one of the best that we’ve seen leading up to the big game. It shows off the product well, and also introduces enough of a “wow” factor with pop-culture references galore that people will be talking about it. Even though “The Walking Dead” network AMC has had a number disputes with other providers such as Dish Network, their relationship with Time Warner Cable is certainly rock solid.
