‘How I Met Your Mother’ season 8 spoilers: Kyle MacLachlan returns as the Captain

Just in case you wanted to see “How I Met Your Mother” take a visit even deeper into the past with its guest casting, take a look at the following news: a certain Captain is steering his way back onto the show.

Multiple sources are confirming to us that Kyle MacLachlan, who played the husband to Jennifer Morrison’s character of Zoey on the sixth season of the CBS hit, has booked an appearance in an episode slated to air a little bit later this year. However, there is sadly no word just yet on why this is the time that the Captain decided to make his presence known again. He and Ted Mosby had a pretty interesting relationship for most of their time onscreen, as the Captain believed Ted to be a very good friend before realizing that his wife had increasingly romantic feelings for him.

While we are thrilled to see MacLachlan back, we’re not sure how to feel about the rest of the story. Zoey was never a very likable character on the show, and her entire relationship with Ted seemed to be largely based on the fact that they hated each other and constantly fought over every little thing under the sun. With this in mind, any reminder of her is not necessarily a great thing (and we are sure that she will be at least mentioned in the conservation between the Captain and Ted). There is no question, meanwhile, that this was a great role for Morrison to take, as it helped to segue her from “House” into a leading role on “Once Upon a Time” as Emma.
