‘How I Met Your Mother’ season 8 spoilers: Who is officially NOT the mother
We have spent so much time trying to guess over the years as to who is the mother on “How I Met Your Mother,” and there has been one theory that has quickly become a fan favorite over the past season and a half: the woman that Ted is going to marry is none other than Barney’s half-sister, who is someone who has never been met on the show, but who would be the right age for everything to work out.
However, we are learning now that this is definitely not going to be the case based on the official synopsis for “Ring Up!,” the new episode of the show that will be airing a little later this month. While it is not confirmed that the character played by Ashley Benson in Carly is Barney’s half-sister, it certainly gives further evidence to what we already know:
“Barney begs Ted to continue seeing his much younger, much wilder girlfriend, even though Ted has nothing in common with her. Meanwhile, Robin must adjust to the power of the bling.”
Another part of CBS’ press release states that Barney’s feelings change somewhat when he realizes just who Carly is, which suggests to us that she is ultimately related to him. We don’t believe that the Mother is supposed to be someone that Ted has met on the show before, since then we would be titling it “How I Met Your Mother for the Second Time.” With that in mind, this is yet another possibility to mark off the list.
The big challenge for CBS now is that in casting Benson, you’ve created another person that is going to make his wedding a little more complicated later. She’s a busy young woman thanks to “Pretty Little Liars,” but don’t you have to have both her and John Lithgow present for his wedding? They may not be that close, but it’s not really out of choice so much as it is that one party did not know the other existed for a long time.
If you want to see some early preparations for this wedding (including the current date), that information can be found in the video here.

I believe that the mother will be someone that Ted “bumped into” in a previous episode. Since this episode aired, I’ve been 99.9% sure who the Mother will be. Let’s go back to March 17th, 2008…the Saint Patrick’s day episode (No Tomorrow), where Barney & Ted abandon Lilly and Marshall at home to instead go out to a bar. Barney tells Ted to live like there’s no tomorrow…which Ted does. But enough of the synopsis! Half way through the episode, Ted bumps into a lovely Brunette (Nicole Muirbrook) who he apologizes to and she responds in kind. As soon as I saw that scene, it just seemed that there was too much focus on that bump between them. If you watch the episode, you’ll see what I mean. When we find out that the yellow umbrella belonged to the future Mrs. Ted Mosby, I went back and did my best to check out the woman holding the umbrella outside the club in the rain to see if she matched the woman in the club. I could tell she was Brunette…check. I could see she was tanned…check. And I noticed she had the same color of pants…check. Not very scientific I know, but I am damn sure that’s who it is.
I’m curious to see if they use the same actress to portray her when they start to introduce the mother character into series. So keep what I’ve said here in mind when Bays & Thomas finally pull back the curtain on the “Mother” of all secrets!
