Golden Globes 2013: Tina Fey, Amy Poehler zing James Cameron, more in opening

Golden GlobesWith the Golden Globes the past few years, everyone has looked forward to the first 5-10 minutes largely for one reason and one reason only: seeing what Ricky Gervais has to say to offend most of the Hollywood community. However, this was a new year with new hosts and a new style; and with this in mind, it was inevitable that we were going to be seeing a change.

So with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler at the helm for the show this year, how many changes were there? The obvious one came via the fact that these two were willing to show a little bit of skin, and then most of the jokes were a little cheeky rather than extremely edgy. Of course, there were a few exceptions, and these actually drew a better reaction from the crowd than anything that Gervais:

-Poehler proclaiming that Kathryn Bigelow understood torture because she was “married to James Cameron for three years.”

-Fey’s zinger to Anne Hathaway that she had not seen anyone as alone as she was in “Les Miserables” as she was hosting the Oscars with James Franco.

There were some negatives mixed in here: a joke regarding “Homeland’s” Mandy Patinkin fell extremely flat (probably the only thing pertaining to the Showtime drama that didn’t work here), and the jokes about Lena Dunham were something that we have seen time and time again on awards shows over the past year. While we will always have a soft spot in our heart for Ricky, these two comediennes did a fantastic job in getting the show off to a very strong start, which is not always easy to do in front of a cynical audience.
