‘Downton Abbey’ season 3 spoilers: Lesley Nicol talks romance, Mrs. Patmore

Downton AbbeyIs Mrs. Patmore finally going to find love again on “Downton Abbey” season 3? The promotional material for the Christmas special has suggested at times thus far that there could be some love in the cards for the character moving forward, and now we are starting to get more and more evidence that this could actually happen. (Warning: the following contains spoilers for American readers. Move forward at your own risk.)

As a matter of fact, it turns out that it was specifically the actress behind the role herself in Lesley Nicol who campaigned to try and make sure that the storyline ended up working out? Speaking in a lengthy (and rather fantastic) new interview with the Daily Beast, here is what she had to say on this very subject:

“There could indeed be [a romance]. I made a request for this. I’ve asked them over the last two years, but I spoke to Julian [Fellowes] the very first day of this season. Then I worried and I thought, I’ve asked him too many times and I think he’s getting fed up … I even suggested somebody that it could have been. But he went a different way.

“People in their 50s in the world, there’s a perception that they won’t have feelings like that, which of course is complete rubbish … And I thought there might be some comic potential if we saw her suddenly get a bit hot and bothered.”

Considering all of the tragedy that has happened this year in between the death of Sybil, Grantham making a mistake with an investment, and the Lady Edith – Sir Anthony tragedy, we have a feeling that the world is really quite ready for a story that will make them smile. Considering that Mrs. Patmore is such a wonderfully bright and cheerful character, she seems like the perfect person to be front and center.
