‘Downton Abbey’ season 3 spoilers: Why are fans angry at Hugh Bonneville
Does Hugh Bonneville have some serious explaining to do at the moment? Not exactly; however, it does feel as though some folks are still interested in taking out some of their pent-up anger on the actor over some of what transpired when it came to his character over the course of “Downton Abbey” season 3. (Let’s start with a MAJOR warning here: if you want to avoid spoilers in America, you should stop reading now.)
As you may recall if you have watched season 3 already, Lord Grantham has seen his relationship with Cora collapse over some medical decisions that were made as Sybil was giving birth … some that ended up leading directly to her death. Like Cora, fans were not happy about this, and Bonneville reveals in a new interview with the Independent that many folks have even chose to fire away hate mail in his direction:
“People on Twitter were devastated. I’ve had hate mail and bomb threats, because I’m obviously the most evil person on the planet for favouring one piece of medical advice other another. In some people’s eyes, it’s my fault, because obviously I do live in ‘Downton Abbey’!
“I don’t want you to take this the wrong way, but it’s lovely that people are devastated about Sybil’s death. It shows they’ve invested in the world, and it’s a real compliment that they care so much.”
The only good news for Robert is that his relationship with Cora starts to become repaired at the end of the season, even though Sybil’s death has still left a gaping hole in the Abbey as Tom struggles to get adjusted not only to his new position assisting the house, but also being a father to his daughter Sybil at the same time.
