‘Downton Abbey’ season 4 spoilers: Who’s joking about the returning rumors?
Considering that “Downton Abbey” season 3 is airing in America in just a month, many of the show’s cast members are getting opportunities to speak out left and right all over again. This has led to a number of promotional appearances, including a screening in Los Angeles this week featuring Hugh Bonneville, Rob James-Collier, and executive producer Gareth Neame. (Warning: the following contains spoilers for American readers.)
While the chat was largely based around season 3, the guest appearance from Shirley MacLaine (which is not nearly as substantial as some may think), there were some moments at the end where talk centered around the season that will be shooting for ITV next year. While some actors (including Bonneville) are locked in to return, some others are not. This led James-Collier to ask the following rather funny question to Neame in front of countless show fans:
“Gareth, am I coming back? I have a mortgage and a small child!”
Considering the arc that Thomas was on at the end of season 3, it would be a shock if he does not return. After all, the character was thrown into fire courtesy of allegations that he made a move on new downstairs employee Jimmy (Ed Speleers) without his consent, even though that was not entirely the case. Jimmy, afraid of what would happen if anyone learned about his true nature, ultimately went along with the plan to have Thomas fired from the Abbey until he was convinced otherwise at the last minute. Thanks to that, both parties are still under Robert’s employ, and Jimmy even has received a promotion to keep him happy.

Then there were a scene when Thomas and O’Brian was discussing why Mr. Permuk would died in his own bed and Thomas was questioning whether he managed to make in under his own steam from Lady Mary’s bedroom to the guest bedroom on his own. That always left me wondering why the storyline never continue with that detail.

Yes most definitely Thomas must return for Season 4. I always thought that the show never really fully explain the death of Mr. Permuk the Turkish Diplomat. It would be so exciting if the storyline will link Thomas into it. After all he was the one that create an uncomfortable incident and was blackmailed into showing Mr. Permuk the secret way to Lady Mary’s bedroom. Then Mr. Permuk mysteriously died in her bed. A handsome healthy man like Mr. Permuk should not die from just having sex. The Agatha Christie in me always thought of a more mysterious circumstance. The likely scenario would be that Thomas had laced his hot Coco with poison. There were conversation among the servant right after they discover Mr. Permuk death that Thomas made a comment that “Mr. Permuk did not care for his Coco much”. That line left me wondering all this time if Thomas knew exactly what happened to him.
So to me, it would be logical if they the open Season 4 with Mr. Permuk’s parent came calling and raised hell about his son’s death. (Omar Sharif would be perfect for Mr. Permuk’s Diplomat father). Then the detective discovered that Thomas was involved and charged him with murder.

My hairstyle, English-born, has been talking about Downton Abbey. I was looking through the remote Guide for another show and came across Downton Abbey. Then…I saw Rob Collier-James (formerly of Coronation Street) and started to watch. I don’t know the name of his character but now that Season Three is about to start here in Canada, January 6, 2013, I will definitely be watching. I love the 20s/30s era and….Shirley McLaine.
If “Thomas” is played by Collier-James, then definitely, I’d like to see him back.
