How Elementary season 6 could draw better ratings over the summer

Elementary season 6

If CBS has a specific plan for Elementary season 6 at the moment, they are not conveying that to anyone outside of the network.

What we know at the moment is this: They have ordered a sixth season, and for the time being it appears as though this sixth season is going to run for 21 episodes as a whole. That is clearly too many episodes for the show to start airing in the spring and have it wrapped up before May sweeps. Indications are that Elementary could up airing over the summer, and this could end up being better than some of the other solutions that are out there.

1. A split season – Theoretically, CBS could choose to air the first half of season 6 in the spring and then save the second half for the fall. There’s nothing out there that suggests that they have to air the show all at one time. They could even do a lengthier hiatus between one spring and the next if they really wanted to.

The enormous drawback to this would be that unless you are sure this is your final season coming up, do you really want to run the risk of losing some of your cast members? You can’t allow your cast to stay under contract for that long — few shows would allow that since sooner or later, actors do deserve the opportunity to get work elsewhere.

2. Saturdays – This is something else that the producers for Elementary could do, but it’s probably the worst-case scenario. Ratings stink on Saturdays. The only positive here is that there wouldn’t be any competition. The show would be lucky to average a 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic, and at this point that may not be enough to get it renewed for another season.

If there is an ideal spot for the show this summer, it’s actual a spot that should be familiar to it: Thursdays at 10:00 p.m. Eastern. Put it on in the spot previously occupied by Zoo, and one that follows up Big Brother. While the two shows don’t have all that similar of an audience, we can’t think of a better way for Elementary at this point in its run to get some attention. It needs at this point virtually whatever it can in an effort to stay alive.
