Being Mary Jane season 5 renewal hopes for Gabrielle Union, cast

Being Mary Jane

Is there still a good chance of a Being Mary Jane season 5 renewal coming up in the future, or is the BET series doomed?

At the moment, CarterMatt does still feel that it’s a little too early to tell one way or another. Let’s just get the bad news out of the way first though, for the sake of illuminating what some of the clear problems are. Many of them start with not only the show’s ratings declining, but also the full extent of it. This past episode ended up scoring a 0.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic, and that’s not all that bad for cable. The larger problem here is that it does still mark a decline of around 50% versus where the show was at during most of the third season.

It’s hard to really identify the specific reason for so many viewers bailing on watching this show live between season 3 and season 4 — you can cite the long layoff between seasons if you want, but we’ve seen shows like Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones earlier this year use that long hiatus in order to actually generate even more viewers than they had previously. Even if there were some viewers confused as to when the show was on, odds are that they would’ve found it and figured it out if they were intent enough to keep watching Gabrielle Union and the rest of the cast.

This is the concern: If Being Mary Jane is doing something that is causing viewers to move away from watching the show, then we feel like in turn there is a cause for concern with the season 5 ratings. What if the show loses a good 50% of its audience again? We’re starting to get to a point now where it feels a little bit as though the show’s on some thin ice, especially if it continues to shed viewers at the rate in which it did this year.

If there is a little bit of a silver lining at present, it’s this: Being Mary Jane may still have better ratings than the majority of other prime-time series that are out there across the cable spectrum at the moment. If BET is thinking with that in mind first and foremost, maybe you’re going to have a chance to see a little bit more of it. If it has some other concerns, the network could make a different decision. Odds are, we’re going to be seeing some sort of decision made on the show’s fate and future in the coming weeks.
