Doctor Who season 11: Peter Capaldi open to return … eventually

Peter Capaldi

When Doctor Who has its Christmas Special later this year, it may be easy to assume that this is going to be the final appearance for Peter Capaldi. Yet, that may not actually be the case at all! There still could be a chance to see him down the road, depending on course on whatever the story needs were at any given moment.

Speaking in a new interview now with Digital Spy, Capaldi makes it abundantly clear that he would like to come back down the road provided that there’s a good story that would make sense for him to return:

“I’m sure if it was right, if I thought the material was right, and it was the right time to do it … I love Doctor Who, so it’s great to be in it. But I think there comes a time… when you’ve gotta go, you’ve gotta go, and leave it behind and let it get on with itself. Maybe in some years’ time, I could pop up again. I’m quite happy to do that.”

We do think that history is going to be kind to Capaldi’s reign, with him having a number of wonderful adventures alongside some memorable co-stars. He brought us tremendous chemistry with Michelle Gomez, an unlimited amount of gravitas, and some great performances that encouraged us to be constantly attuned to our surroundings. Some of our favorite episodes of the entire Doctor Who franchise came from during his tenure, with “Listen” probably topping the list. While we do love the event episodes as much as anyone out there, something special still does remain with the standard story of the week that tests the imagination and gives you an opportunity to explore some new and very interesting avenues.

Jodie Whittaker is taking over for Capaldi starting with the end of the Christmas Special, and with season11 when it premieres. We feel like a Capaldi return is best suited for either another big anniversary or even Christmas Special — you don’t want to do it right away, but maybe in three or four years’ time there will be a thirst to pair off The Doctor with a different version of themselves in order to see precisely what happens then. We certainly did enjoy having David Tennant and Matt Smith run around together for a time, and we will see in the Christmas Special a version of the first Doctor (played in this instance by John Bradley) alongside Capaldi’s Twelve. William Hartnell, regrettably, is no longer with us and has not been for quite some time.
