American Idol 16 auditions underway; judging panel still incomplete

American Idol 16 auditions

For everyone out there looking to be the next singing superstar, the good news is that American Idol 16 auditions are underway! They are happening all across America via the bus tour (today, they are in Oakland), and you’ll be seeing this continue in the weeks to come.

You can find out more about audition cities and dates by heading over to the official website — which just so happens to also have some more details regarding how you can audition online. Good luck if you try out!

What we personally think is the most interesting about where the show is right now, is that there are tons of people auditioning not even knowing who they will be auditioning for if they make it to the next phase of the competition. The judges aren’t present until a little later on the process, and right now we’ve got the $25 million woman in Katy Perry alongside a number of other empty chairs. There are reports of tough negotiations going on, and that Charlie Puth, Luke Bryan, Keith Urban, and Lionel Richie are all contenders to land the final spots on the panel.

Do we think that a panel will be finalized within the next few weeks? Certainly, but the lack of a secure panel is one of the biggest mistakes that the show has going for it at the moment, given that it makes it so much harder to excite potential contestants when they don’t know who they will be meeting.

One of the bigger problems with the show financially is fairly easy to telegraph here — they paid Perry so much money that it’s elevated expectations for other people who are out there considering being a judge. While we don’t think anyone is seeking out money that is anywhere close to her paycheck, they may still think that they are worthy of more money than what is presently being offered. In turn, one of the big problems here for ABC is that they don’t have all that much money left if they think that there’s going to be a way to turn a profit with this show. They need to hire three or four more judges on the cheap that will also draw in viewers and not make it feel like the new show is all about Katy Perry paired up with a bunch of scrubs. Mostly we want to see judges that have good chemistry, because no matter how big of a star you are, if everyone doesn’t gel and play off each other in a fun way then it’s not going to be fun to watch.

Ultimately, we’ll see what ABC comes up with — we are going to be waiting for a good while to see what the next American Idol panel actually looks like on TV, given that it’s not expected to premiere until the late winter/early spring, especially if the plan is for the show to air on Sundays. You have to get through the Super Bowl and awards season first.
