Chicago PD season 5 spoilers: How is Antonio coming back?

How is Antonio coming back

We were absolutely thrilled to learn that Jon Seda was going to be returning to Chicago PD season 5 in his role of Antonio Dawson. Yet, there were still questions over the mechanics of how in the world this is all going to work out? The last we saw the character, he was locked-in as a part of Chicago Justice, and he had a nice job there that allowed him to steer clear of some of the work that he’d done in Intelligence. So why would Antonio give that up to go back?

Chicago Justice found itself canceled, and with that, there was a choice that Dick Wolf and the entire team had to make: Either allow Antonio to remain in this position and lose Seda as a full-time part of the franchise (which no one wants), or find a way to get him back in the fold over on Chicago PD. Obviously, it’s a thrill to have him back here given that Antonio is a beloved part of this universe, but there still has to be a way in order to make this work in Intelligence once more. It’s not so simple as him just popping back up as a member of that team.

This brings us to the next important order of business: How do you find a logical way to make him a full-time member of his previous team again? Well, it could have to do with a case that Antonio is uniquely qualified to take on, based on what Seda told Entertianment Weekly recently:

“The suspect that they’re going after, they hit a bump in the road and they need someone to come in that this guy has never seen and can do a great job undercover, and that’s where Antonio comes in.”

Basically, there’s nobody else that Intelligence could have trusted for this particular job beyond Antonio, and that made him the ideal person to come in and do this job. We’re excited to see what this looks like on the show, but all signs point to this not being a smooth transition in the slightest. After all, Seda teases that we’re going to be getting a chance to see some tension play out between him and Voight over some policies that are coming into effect at Intelligence. That makes some sense, given that he’s coming in from somewhere else with its own set of rules and some of this could feel a little bit foreign to him at this point.

Seda’s not the only change coming this season…

After all, there are many of them coming! You’ve got Tracy Spiridakos coming on full-time as Hailey Upton, and then beyond that, the departure of Sophia Bush. Rick Eid is also working behind the scenes as the new showrunner in the place of Matt Olmstead. There will be a lot of new aspects coming up with the show this season, so we’ll see how all of that manifests itself on the screen.
