Outlander season 4 filming dates, casting notices start to circulate
We revealed recently via executive producer Matthew B. Roberts early details about said casting. Now, there is even more to discuss! In a post on Facebook (see the bottom of the article), Scottish agency Real People Scotland provides some further insight on what producers want. The listing highlights an interest in “black African males and females,” anywhere between 18 and 60 years old, as extras for the upcoming season. There are further details and contact information in the post if you find yourself interested. Our advice if you go for a part: Make zero assumptions about getting screen time or anything else. Enjoy yourself and focus more on that than anything.
Beyond casting talk, why not discuss the mention of Outlander season 4 filming dates? The listing suggests that filming will begin in central Scotland in September, and then go until the spring of 2018 (likely subject to change). This timeline feels fairly similar to season 3, which started in fall 2016 and ended in June. Several factors play a role in how the schedule works, including specific filming locations, pre-production, and also actor schedules. We wonder if production may end earlier for season 4, provided it remains mostly in Scotland. The substantial move to South Africa, which included hiring new crew members and building new sets, played a part in season 3 filming lasting so long. Granted, even without the move production always takes a long time. (The Droughtlander is long either way!)
Technically, we should point out that this casting notice never mentions the show by name. However, Outlander is the only show that makes sense. Few other internationally-popular shows film in the area. Also, how many others carry with them a time-travel label? The timeline for filming fits based on the information out there. Cheers to Starz for giving the show such an early renewal, and allowing it to begin this casting process before season 3 even premieres. Obviously, they were aware of filming needs far in advance when they issued that renewal out. They want the show to succeed, and not force something out that feels rushed.
The tiniest Outlander season 4 tease
Scotland will double for America on the show if you haven’t heard that already. (It makes sense; no need to hire new crew members and there are geographic similarities.) Scotland itself remains important to the story, but the journey of Jamie and Claire moves onward in Voyager and will continue in Drums of Autumn, the fourth book in the Diana Gabaldon series.
Outlander season 4 may premiere as early as fall 2018. However, time will tell if that remains the case.

Matt:
After they’re done in Scotland, are they returning to South Africa to film the scenes on ships? I would think they would need to, so if that’s the case then the actual production schedule may be longer than the spring timeframe you mentioned.
The various ship scenes are interspersed throughout the book, so they would need to be seriously shot out of order if they need to take a trip back to South Africa to do the ship scenes.

I haven’t heard anything about a return just yet, but it’s a difficult subject that they’ll probably approach at some point. A lot of it comes to how they structure the books on screen + how long they stay down there to film if they return.

Some important stuff happens on those ships, which affects a lot of storylines throughout the rest of the books, so I’ll be interested to read what you find out. Thanks.

I was thinking about that and wondering. However, they might just go with something similar to what they did at the end of season 1 when they fled to France via ship. They could certainly do that with the Brianna storyline as there is really no dwelling on the actual voyage – pretty much getting on board then the next thing you know she’s in America. If they go into the shipboard detail for Roger it might be different as more of his actual journey on the ship is in the book. It’s such a little piece though (comparatively) that I wonder how much they’ll emphasize it. Might be they could get away with doing it somewhere besides South Africa since they won’t need land shots that would look similar to Jamaica.

Bree goes across the Atlantic very early in the book and they don’t spend a lot of time on it, true. But a short time later Roger follows her across the Atlantic working on Stephen Bonnet’s ship. That they will need to spend time on.
Things happen on Bonnet’s ship that are integral to his story for the longterm, impacting him in to some extent in all of the subsequent books. Bree also visits Stephen Bonnet on his ship, which makes a return in later books. Maybe they might find some way to film those shipboard scenes in Scotland, but it might be easier (and less expensive) to use the ship and sets already down in South Africa. They are already familiar with the crew down there…

Thanks! I think September could be pre-production or exterior filming. It always happens that there are a ton of dates floating around out there. I think October is probably a great guess for main cast and cameras rolling — no better source for DG on that :)
