Supergirl season 3 crossover with The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Arrow to be two-night event
Today, The CW announced that the Melissa Benoist series would be a part of an epic event in late November. Supergirl will kick things off on Monday, November 27, and a special Arrow season 6 episode will follow it. Meanwhile, The Flash and then Legends of Tomorrow are coming up on November 28. This turns the crossover into an epic miniseries event. It engages you right away, and it keeps you from growing tired or getting your schedule for the week too crazy. It’s two nights, and that allows for easier programming. Arrow is the only show that forces you to change up your schedule at all. (It replaces The Brave for that week, provided it lasts that long.)
As for what’s ahead story-wise, it will be more character-specific and less about solely the threat. Last time, the main story was about the Dominators taking hold on Earth-1. This time, the suggestion via TCA suggests that we’re getting something more romantic. Does that mean a wedding that could unite all four shows? There is fun potential to be had there, depending on how the writers choose to go about it. No assumptions for the time being!
More than anything, fun should stand first and foremost as the most important thing to come out of the crossover. You want there to be great arcs, heroes, and villains, but it’s hard to tell a super-dramatic arc with characters who are relative strangers. The true joy of the first crossover stemmed from having Supergirl meet Oliver, Ray Palmer, and the rest of the gang. It marked a nice change of pace for all of the shows, and the Dominators felt more like an afterthought. (Personally, they struggled to really hold any attention.)
Here, the biggest thing to know is that Supergirl should prove a worthy start to the crossover. Last year, it suffered from a little bit of shoehorning — despite the hype around it as a worthy lead-off, the promotion from it felt misleading after the fact. Only the end of the episode mattered to the rest of the crossover event. Here, it stands as the jumping-off point; everything with the other shows will be fully connected to what happens here.
Another reason for the specific scheduling this time is to avoid a hiatus in the middle. With Arrow season 6 airing on Thursday nights at 9:00 p.m. Eastern, that’s two days after Legends of Tomorrow. Viewers despise waiting in 2017, and they wouldn’t love holding on for two days for the conclusion to the story that started with three episodes in two days.
New episodes of all four CW shows start airing this fall. Many announcements exist already but stay tuned for further information.
