American Horror Story: Cult spoilers: Emma Roberts (seemingly) returning

Emma Roberts

While American Horror Story: Cult may not be getting appearances from either Lady Gaga or Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts may be stopping by!

Fresh off of a two-season arc on Scream Queens as the fantastic/super-snarky Chanel Oberlin, executive producer Ryan Murphy seemed to confirm on Instagram that Roberts is now returning to her old stomping grounds for a role. Roberts first joined the Horror Story family back in season 3 as spoiled Hollywood superstar Madison, but then went on to have a notable role in Freak Show following that up. Her Scream Queens role made it challenging for her to have a big impact in the seasons to follow, but it’s very much a thrill to see her back around the show family now.

With that being said … good luck trying to figure out precisely what sort of role we’re meant to see Roberts play. Murphy has been super-secretive about the nature of the various roles in Cult, and even with the people that we know the names for, there still isn’t a whole lot that can be said about the nature of their characters beyond that. There are many mysteries floating around still within the ether of the show, and we’ll have to wait and see precisely what happens come next month when the show premieres. Revealing things isn’t really this franchise’s forte.

Some of the confirmed cast for the new season includes Lena Dunham, Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, Billy Eichner, Colton Haynes, and another Scream Queens alum in Billie Lourd. It shouldn’t surprise anyone that this show has a fairly-large cast, mostly because these are the sorts of casts that Murphy seems to embrace with this show. The main concern here is the same concern that we often have with this show as a whole: Whether or not it’s biting off more than it can chew in terms of giving you familiar faces. It’s great to see such a big roster of performers, but you still have to figure out a way to include all of them and ensure that people aren’t just thrown in there for the sake of doing so.

The best thing about Roberts is rather simple: Her versatility. While she can be very funny, at the same time she can also be really tender and emotional. There’s a reason why Ryan keeps going back to her for roles, and it’s because she takes on everything thrown at her and adds new dimensions to it. She also makes some of her characters likable even when they’re vile.
