NCIS season 15: These characters need more with Mark Harmon’s Gibbs

Mark Harmon's Gibbs

We already know entering NCIS season 15 that Mark Harmon’s Gibbs is in a state of peril. For the sake of this article, we want to look past that.

Provided that Gibbs makes it through his overseas mission in one piece (at the moment, he’s stranded and that doesn’t look like the best of news for anyone), which characters should he be spending some more time with? When you’ve got a show like this, we’re a big proponent for unusual character pairings. You want to throw some different actors together in interesting ways since it does offer up opportunities for exciting material.

Let’s be real: You are doing 24 episodes of a single show playing a single character in a year. Even if you love your work, and we certainly assume that many of these people do, there are inevitably going to be times where things start to become a little more routine. That’s not them disrespecting their work; that’s just a simple product of their existence. Variety, dear friends, is the spice of life!

For the sake of Gibbs, what we’ve cultivated here is a list of three regulars on the show we’d like to see him spend a little bit more time with — he’s obviously super-familiar working with the likes of McGee and Bishop thanks to their work out in the field, so most of our curiosity at the moment lies elsewhere. If this article’s well-received, maybe we’ll do some more down the road!

Abby – The relationship that the two parties have is one of the most endearing parts of the show. They show each other tremendous respect, but their scenes are often fairly limited with each other beyond just visits to the lab. We want to see more opportunities for Abby to have to take that lab and her skills on the road, such as Gibbs going on a remote mission and realizing that he needs someone with her skill set at his side. We’d also find it very fun if there was a mission where Gibbs was in danger and Abby had to save him; there’ve been some variations over the years, but finding ways for her to take the lead as the hero is always a good change of pace.

Ducky – We’ve seen some flashbacks focusing on a younger iteration of David McCallum’s character, and it’d be somewhat fun to see a little more of that in relation to Gibbs. Or, how about an episode where these two guys find themselves trapped and they have to use their brains to get out? Think in terms of a real-life escape room where there is some serious danger. Ducky isn’t going to necessarily be an action star these days, but we do still he can kick butt and take names.

Reeves – First of all, we just want to see more of Duane Henry on the show since he’s so likable! Also, his character brings a very different energy. It’s easy to imagine missions that he and Gibbs could collaborate on. The lack of individual screen time here to date is more of a product of Henry’s relative newness to the show as opposed to some intentional choice on the part of the writers.

With this being Comic-Con Weekend, we recently had a discussion as to whether or not this show, Criminal Minds, and some other prominent crime series should have a larger convention of their own in 2017. We recommend that you check it out over at the link here! (Photo: CBS.)
