The X Factor UK: Is Simon Cowell actually encouraging original songs?

original songsHere’s a twist when it comes to The X Factor that you may not have saw coming — and emphasis on original songs for a change.

Speaking per the Mirror, a source close to the show seems to indicate that the powers-that-be are looking forward to making this long-awaited change:

“Simon knows he can’t change the format too much but one thing he and the contestants can change is what’s sung. If there’s lots of new material it could attract a new audience. Original songs by young performers have generally been well received on Britain’s Got Talent too, so it seems a risk worth taking.”

Do we think that original songs are the key to the show’s future? Probably, since this is one of the few things that this show has lacked for a long time: Emotional connections. While Matt Terry and Louisa Johnson were both enormously talented, it was harder to connect with either one of them on a personal level. You didn’t really know anything about them other than that they are both young people with talent and big dreams. Compare this to Lucy Spraggan, one of the more memorable contestants in show history known for doing original songs. While she hasn’t necessarily had the bigger career, we do think that some of her moments after the fact are a little bit more memorable.

How many performers will actually take the show up on this?

That is a good question, given that not everyone out there is necessarily a good songwriter. Some people are just better singers than they are writers, and that’s fine. Our feeling is that everyone with this show should be able to use whatever they feel is in their arsenal in order to ensure that they get through to the next round. If that means belting a ballad (just as long as it’s not one that’s been done to death on the show already), that’s cool. If it means that they bust out an original song and their guitar, that’s also great. Don’t limit people whatsoever when it comes to what they are going to do on stage.

Will people with original songs get more votes from the British public? Maybe, but not necessarily. There’s a great risk and unpredictability there, and we’re all about that given that you don’t want to predict what is going to happen on a given week. There are probably some original songs that will prove to be rather great, and then there are probably going to be others that are more in the way of duds. That is just the way the world works outside of the show, so why not bring that more into the show itself?
