Emilia Clarke has no interest in Game of Thrones spin-offs as Daenerys

While Emilia Clarke recognizes that Game of Thrones and Daenerys changed her life, she’s ready to move to the next step.

In a lengthy new feature piece over at Rolling Stone, Clarke recognized that there are some spin-offs already in development over at HBO to continue the franchise created by George R.R. Martin. However, that doesn’t mean that she is altogether interested in doing any of them:

“I mean, I have no doubt there’ll be prequels and sequels and who knows what else. But am doing one more season. And then that’ll be it.”

There is obviously no reason for Clarke to do any more of the series, given that Game of Thrones is really the story of Daenerys and a few other characters, and her role would feel out of place anywhere else along the map. She can shine and succeed here, and then continue to take on any other project she sees fit. She’s becoming more of a franchise staple; while her attempt at the Terminator franchise didn’t lead to huge box-office earnings, she is a part of the upcoming Young Han Solo project over at Disney that recent switched directors. She cannot say much publicly about her role, but it’s something worth watching in the new year whenever the project comes out. More than likely, there’ll be further projects where that comes from.

In addition to discussing her future as Daenerys, Clarke also addressed for a moment some of what filming was like for her this season, including spending some more time in the primary Belfast shooting location:

“Spoiler alert – I normally don’t spend very much time in Belfast, but this last season I spent a little more time there … It’s a really interesting season in terms of some loose ends that have been tied, some really satisfying plot points, some things where you’re like, ‘Oh, my God. I forgot about that!’ Rumors are going to be confirmed or denied.”

There are certainly many different loose ends out there that still could be tied up, whether it be the status of Gendry to further insight into Jon Snow’s parentage. Season 6 did a great job of bringing back Rickon Stark after he was gone from the world practically forever, even if his ending was not exactly a great one.

Clarke’s interview also is well-timed given that the seventh season of Game of Thrones will premiere on HBO come July 16, and we anticipate that the promotional tour is only going to get more and more cluttered between now and when the show is back. Hopefully, we’ll have some further updates all about it as the premiere nears — just don’t expect any major spoilers along the way.

One other thing we should mention from Clarke’s interview — as per our knowledge, we don’t think there are any Game of Thrones sequels being planned. All of the ideas out there are more of the prequel variety.

If you missed it…
