The Originals season 5: Can Nathaniel Buzolic be a regular, already?

Nathaniel Buzolic

There’s been a great deal of conversation here at the site about The Originals season 5 through the lens of Candice King and Caroline, and that makes sense — the season 4 finale absolutely set up the story in a way in which she could appear down the road. There are Klaroline fans aplenty out there very much intent on seeing it happen, and we offer many of them all of the support in the world in making that happen.

Now that we’ve said that … it feels like we haven’t done enough service to Nathaniel Buzolic and his character Kol. He’s been a fan favorite on the series / The Vampire Diaries for years, he’s dynamic, and we’ve seen just about every side of the guy. We’ve seen him be vicious and ruthless, but we’ve also seen that softer, romantic side. You can argue that the season 4 finale was his road to a happy ending, or however much a character like him could have, all things considered.

Yet, we know full well that this is The Originals. This is a world where happiness is fleeting, where people die, and where occasionally children become possessed with ancients witches that threaten to tear apart their entire families forever. (Too specific?) Even if Kol does find happiness, there are so many different avenues worth exploring with him. As a result of that, it does feel right that this is the time to promote Buzolic to regular, a position that arguably he’s merited for some time now.

Is he a busy guy? Absolutely — he just did Hacksaw Ridge, and that’s the sort of movie gig that can launch all sorts of opportunities. Yet, we hope that he finds room in his schedule for 13 episodes a year, at least for however long the show lasts. For the writers, let’s hope that they could find the room to tell more stories with him where he could interact with Klaus, Hayley, Marcel, and other people he may not often get a chance to.

A series regular promotion is not necessarily a commitment to appear in every episode; however, it does look in a cast member and ensure that they will be a part of the story to come. You already saw a good bit of Buzolic in season 4, so what this promotion would mean at this point is a statement from both The CW and Warner Bros. to Nathaniel and the fans. They’d be telling him that they value his work and want to ensure that he remains a part of the show for some time to come. Meanwhile, they’d also be telling fans that they have a significant reason to be excited. These promotions matter financially, but they also provide that greater sense of optimism and satisfaction.

The Originals season 5 won’t be premiering until winter / spring 2018, so no matter what happens, we do have a long period of time to wait.
