America’s Got Talent video: Final Draft auditions with James Brown cover
In the new video below (via Billboard), you can see the four-piece singing group audition to a cover of James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World.” This is not an easy song to do — we do see it attempted often on the singing-show circuit, but this is a little bit different in that you’re getting a chance to see multiple people try to take on this super-tough song at the same time. We haven’t seen too many groups try to rock this out.
Suffice it to say, the guys nail this! It’s one of the best vocal performances we’ve seen in the auditions so far this season. This group has brilliant chemistry with each other on stage, and they hit many of the notes while giving us some fun showmanship. The more comfortable that they get performing with each other on stage, and the better they’ll probably be down the road.
If there is one suggestion that we would offer up to them as the season progresses, it is that they continue to work on finding strategic songs to perform. While this is a great audition song since it shows off so much of what they can do vocally, it would heavily benefit them to find something a little more current — or to put a current spin on an old song — to show off their commercial viability in 2017. This is an issue that many vocal groups run into on this show over time; they stick with familiar numbers, but they struggle to get a lot of traction following the show airing, so give us something memorable and avoid the same songs that have been beaten to death on other talent shows.
One other thing to look for in Tuesday’s episode: A Golden Buzzer from Heidi Klum. After all, she is the only judge at the moment to have not used one. If it’s used here, then Final Draft goes straight through to the live shows and they are a great group to give it to!
