Taken season 2 pushed to midseason; should Timeless take its place?

For those hoping to see Taken season 2 air on Fridays this fall, the following news will certainly be disappointing — it doesn’t look as though it is happening.

According to a report from TVLine, the Clive Standen series has been bumped to midseason, which means that it could feasibly now premiere in January or February. The show did experience some creative changes as of late, with Person of Interest executive producer Greg Plageman taking over in the role of showrunner, and that could be one justification behind the move. Whether or not the show is keeping its original extended episode count remains to be seen.

What this move does signify now is that NBC has an open timeslot on Friday nights at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time, and there are several different things that they could opt to do with it. It’s possible that the network is going to opt for two hours of Dateline, or they could move forward one of their other products such as their reality series The Handmade Project or some of their comedies that they have on top.

Or, there’s also the possibility that NBC look at making #TimelessFridays into a reality. This is something that we advocated for throughout the spring, given that this is a show that should fare well at an earlier timeslot than 10:00 p.m. on Mondays. On Fridays, it would have lower ratings expectations and may be able to have a longer life if properly promoted there. NBC will not want to throw a new series into that timeslot, so why not give this a chance since you already know that the show’s ratings are probably going to be on the lower end of the spectrum? Maybe if this carves out a niche following here, Timeless can be for the network what Grimm was for many years: A solid utility player that has a big DVR following.

As for possible concerns, one of the biggest ones could be if Timeless would be ready in time (ironic, right?). Behind-the-scenes schedules are tricky to decipher, but given that there is still four months between now and October (NBC likes to start their Friday shows later in the fall to improve sampling for other programs), there could be a way to make it work.
