Once Upon a Time season 7: Co-creator Adam Horowitz leaves Twitter
If you go and look for his Twitter account, you’ll see that it’s vanished from the web. His Instagram account is still active at the moment, and you will see that he is still there and posting with some regularity. While we can’t say for certain why he’s decided to leave Twitter, we somewhat understand if it has to do with general fan reaction. There are some people on social media who are delightful, insightful, and entertaining (personally we spend an obscene amount on twitter talking to anyone and everyone about TV). However, there are social media users who are incredibly mean and brutal. They take pride in getting blocked and insulting someone and we’ve never understood the appeal of being a keyboard cowboy. Horowitz has probably been attacked with more frequency on Twitter than almost any other showrunner on TV, at least ever since Damon Lindelof (who ironically also was a part of Lost) decided to leave the social-media site. Some are upset with him over cast departures, and others over story direction, and while using social media to express upset feelings can be a good release, there’s a constructive way to do it, and then there’s burning people to the ground in a nasty way that gets nothing accomplished. Now, Horowitz is not on Twitter – so no one can express anything to him anymore.
There is some irony in that he doesn’t control some of the things that people are mad at him over, but there’s also some irony in attacking him when he and Edward Kitsis are responsible for creating the characters in the first place. Fan opinion matters (without fans, there are no shows), however creators matter, because without them there are no shows either.
Ultimately, we are in an era that we do like to think of as a tipping point in society, one that goes so much beyond showrunners leaving social media. This is a time when people are more negative than ever, and they feel like the internet gives them license to say every terrible thing they think under a veil of anonymity. So few would do so if they chose to go online using their real name and picture. We just wish that there were more avenues for people to be positive and encourage each other … or at least hear people out.
Are we nervous about Once Upon a Time season 7? Absolutely, but we’ll still give them a chance to see what Horowitz and the writers offer up. They’ve at least got the whole summer to think up ideas.
