Poldark writer comments on Aidan Turner show’s future beyond season 4
Leading up to the premiere of season 3 this weekend on BBC One, writer Debbie Horsfield tells Digital Spy that the future for the show is relatively unclear. There is already that season 4 renewal, but for the time being, that’s it:
“We don’t know how popular it’s going to be; whether it’ll continue to be popular, whether we’ll be asked to do more.”
At the moment, Poldark is immensely popular both in Great Britain and elsewhere. It remains to be seen if moving the show to earlier in the summer proves to be a smart move; after all, this means that the series will not be faced into competition with Victoria, and the sentiment out there is that these two shows were in heavy competition with each other for most of their respective runs last time.
Personally, of course we’d like to think that Poldark could continue long enough to finish the entire Winston Graham series. There is an epic time jump coming if they follow the books, and if they wanted to take a break between seasons, that is the obvious time to do that. (Not that we’re advocating for the show to take a break.) One of the great things about British television is that there aren’t the same demands as in the States to do a season every year or to have each season last some predetermined number of episodes. There is a little bit more of flexibility there, and that’s something that is very much appreciated for the sake of not jamming in filler episodes or anything else that detracts from the story. (The landscape in America is changing, but the show’s not necessarily there yet.)
Poldark season 4 will film in the months to come; there is no premiere date yet, but with the current timeline the show could easily premiere at some point in the summer of 2018.
