NCIS viewers ask how many Agent Gibbs rules are there? Depends on who you ask

Gibbs rules

On NCIS when viewers hear NCIS Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs offer up a rule, they pay particular attention. One of the many enjoyments of watching the popular show on CBS is how Gibbs leads his team to solving crime. He does it in a way that invokes theories, facts and rules. Over the years, NCIS viewers often ask how many Gibbs rules are there out there: 10, 20 or even more? Perhaps the figure isn’t as important as the idea. No other show has a main character who offers up advice in the form of rules, and on such a regular basis.

Checking out the show and chatting with the fans, it appears to be impossible to give an exact number. The NCIS official site (on CBS) offers over 30 rules. Serious fans suggest there are references to over 50 rules, thoughnot all were shared with the fans in chronological order. Is there an official answer? Well, nothing that we could find to cement the exact number of rules if you are looking to have a tally, one that includes the recent finale broadcast in May.

It’s going to sound crazy, but Agent Gibbs does offer advice that is solid even without referencing rules. These nuggets of information could be considered rules in some way, as well. He may not have a rule number to go with it, but the advice is solid and when he offers it, there is no doubt that it’s being delivered in a way that is genuine and also helpful.

Does it matter how many Agent Gibbs rules are there?

What’s nice about NCIS is that it is a TV show that is always progressing. The writers of NCIS could add more of Agent Gibbs’ rules any time it might fit into an episode. It could be a reflection of a crime in the past, a new look at technology of the future, or an everyday rule to combat criminals. This flexibility is one of many reasons the fans adore the show. The rules are just something insightful to go along with it!
