Game of Thrones spin-offs: All projects in development are prequels
What may surprise you now is just what sort of consideration is out there on the network’s part. You may have heard previously that there were four projects in development; in a new post on his Not a Blog, author George R.R. Martin confirmed that following his recent meeting in Los Angeles, there are now five different projects that are being worked on. This doesn’t mean that five projects will air, but this is HBO looking at various ideas hoping to find one to put on after the main show that makes some sense.
Meanwhile, Martin also confirmed the specific time frame that the spin-offs are looking at for the time being:
“None of these new shows will be ‘spinning off’ from GOT in the traditional sense. We are not talking Joey or AfterMASH or even Frazier or Lou Grant, where characters from one show continue on to another. So all of you who were hoping for the further adventures of Hot Pie are doomed to disappointment. Every one of the concepts under discussion is a prequel, rather than a sequel. Some may not even be set on Westeros. Rather than ‘spinoff’ or ‘prequel,’ however, I prefer the term ‘successor show.’ That’s what I’ve been calling them.”
The idea of a prequel is not necessarily the most exciting thing in the world with this franchise, mostly because there is something rather deflating about watching a show when you know how it’s going to end. That is one of the biggest obstacles at the moment that any of these shows will face. It’s almost impossible to fathom that any one of them could get ratings on the same level as the flagship show, but the hope is that any new show will still be a pop-culture phenomenon. In terms of spin-offs, the comparisons between this show and Breaking Bad / Better Call Saul could be very apt.
