The Blacklist season 5 spoilers: Ryan Eggold will return as series regular

NBC did not want to wait long in the slightest to cement the future of Ryan Eggold on The Blacklist following the cancellation of The Blacklist: Redemption. According to a new report coming in courtesy of Deadline, Eggold will be a series regular for The Blacklist season 5, returning to the franchise proper for the bulk of the season to come.

Will there be resolution to the spin-off, which featured a stunning turnaround for the characters of Scottie and Howard Hargrave? It’s worthy of discussion given that there is so much investment in some of those characters at this point. The challenge largely becomes this — Redemption was canceled because there were not enough people watching. Now, you have to make the case that bringing those stories onto the main show will suddenly move the needle. That’s not easy.

Eggold’s return to The Blacklist was almost a given. He was a major part of season 4 prior to his departure to the spin-off show, and he and Liz are married and the two share a child together in Agnes. Unless they opted to kill him off in some sort of stunning fashion, there was no way to avoid making this move. There are viewers who love the character and viewers who feel the opposite; he’s one of the more polarizing people on the show. With the right story, he can be very compelling; Redemption was a good showcase for that when he was off doing undercover missions and wrestling his own family history.

The Blacklist season 5 will premiere on NBC potentially this fall, and the landscape of the show will be very different regardless of what happens with Tom. Remember that for the upcoming finale episode, there will be a showdown between Raymond Reddington and Mr. Kaplan like no other. By the end of the two hours, there could be a resolution there. Not only that, but the secret about the relationship between Reddington and Liz Keen could rock the entire series to its core and change the game forever.
